Walk The Wight 2023

The first of Charlie’s challenges was “Walk the Wight”, walking from across the Isle of Wight from Bembridge in the east to Alum Bay in the west. Although I have lived on the island since it started in 1991, I have never done the whole 42km, only doing the children’s bit from Freshwater Bay with my daughter when she was at Primary School.

In preparation from Kilimanjaro, I’d bought my first pair of walking boots and thought I’d join Charlie in his first challenge to make sure they were going to be ok for what laid ahead. I’d worn them in a bit and so they were ok but my feet did start to start to hurt walking over Tennyson Down towards the end of the 42km.

Just one blister though so I was happy! The thing that I did discover though was that my hands started swelling being down at my sides so realised that I would need walking poles for future long walks. At the start of the walk, I thought I would record a little snippet at each mile but I soon got bored of doing that so I did every so often and the whole walk took us just over 8 hours and I couldn’t believe how quick the weather changed throughout the day.
